POL is the prototype of a system software that's inspired by the mechanics of magnetism. It mainly focuses on the app- and folderstructure of a system. The biggest problem that POL is meant to solve is the lack of tidiness and the complexity of homescreens on smartphones and tablets with established system software like f.e. Android.
POL ist der Prototyp eines Betriebssystems, das von den Mechaniken des Magnetismus inspiriert ist. Der Fokus liegt vor allem auf der Applikations- und Ordnerstruktur eines Systems. Die Problematik die durch POL hauptsächlich gelöst werden soll ist die Unübersichtlichkeit von Home-Screens auf Smartphones und Tablets mit etablierten Betriebssystemen wie z.B. Android.
The "magnetic" interface of the system is always located in the middle of the screen. In sleep mode, this element either shows the time or the header of one of the subcategories. If you press down on the screen a horseshoe magnet appears that can be rotated freely in all directions. It changes color mid-rotation according to which subcategory and color it's pointing at. When you then let go of the magnet when it's pointing to the desired category the interface get's "polarized" on that category, attracting all apps and files etc. asscoiated with it. Which app, folder etc. belongs to which category and color can be determined in a seperate menu beforehand.
Im Mittelpunkt des Bildschirms befindet sich immer das "magnetische" Interface des Systems. Dieses Element zeigt im Ruhemodus entweder eine Uhrzeit an oder die Überschrift einer Unterkategorie. Hält man den Bildschirm gedrückt, erscheint ein Hufeisenmagnet, der sich frei in alle Richtungen drehen lässt. Während der Drehung wechselt er die Farbe je nachdem auf welche Unterkategorie er zeigt. Anschließend lässt man den Magneten auf der Unterkategorie los, die man anwählen möchte, woraufhin das Interface auf diese "gepolt" wird und die zu ihr zugehörigen Apps, Dateien etc. magnetisch angezogen werden. Welche App, welcher Ordner etc. welcher Unterkategorie und Farbe angehören soll, kann man vorher in einem gesonderten Menü einstellen.
The animation of the icons, too, is strongly inspired by magnetism. They start fairly slowly and get faster after that, which creates the illusion of actual magentic attraction and makes the handling of the system instantly more intuitive. Beside that the design is hich-contrast and minimalistic, because a less simple style in combination with the new way of operating was too confusing.
Auch die Animation der Icons ist stark an den Magnetismus angelehnt. Sie starten recht langsam und werden dann immer schneller, was den Eindruck von tatsächlicher magnetischer Anziehung erweckt und den Umgang mit dem System sofort intuitiver macht. Ansonsten ist die Gestaltung kontrastreich und minimalistisch gehalten, da ein weniger schlichter Stil in Kombination mit der sowieso schon neuartigen Bedienungsweise schnell verwirrend wirkte.
