Mecanismos is a gallery show I produced for Oeno Gallery. I produced 100 unique screen printed collages by combining and recombing a series of mechanical characters.
This series began as a personal response to developments in genetic engineering, artificial intelligence and human manipulation of our environment. It is both frightening and fascinating. We strive to remake the world in our own image. The natural balance is upset or replaced with the artificial. Mecanismo is Spanish for ‘mechanism’. I wanted to create a little universe of mechanisms within this series, a Mecanismos.
Experimentation is an important part of my work. I have always had an admiration of diagrams and scientific objects. I wanted to use this as a starting point to explore new directions. This exploration began with my previous CMY-X prints. With that series, I created limited editions of prints, striving for consistency from first to last. With this series, I had a number in mind, one hundred. The objective was to create individual images, using similar elements, but remixing them throughout. Overall, there is a consistent look, but each print is unique. Creating one hundred of anything is a challenge, but creating one hundred different images proved to be quite a test of my logistic and technical abilities.
