Array Lamp

This is a prototype of a lamp I designed using 3Ds Max. The goal of this was to create a lamp using the same shape repeated. If you look closely you will see the lamp is made up of several toruses, or rings, that are fit together and stretched to create this interesting shape. This can really be seen by looking at the back of the lamp where the light shows through each torus. The prototype was created using a ZCorp 3D powder printer, and the light is a color-changing LED puck light.

Dimensions: 6.75"W x 6.75"D x 14.5"H
The Process
This lamp was created using a ZCorp powder printer. This 3D printer uses an additive method to build the 3D model from the bottom-up. The material is a powder base that is compressed to create a solid form. After the file was finished printing, I had the fun task of vaccuuming the powder from my lamp to remove it and then use an airbrush to dust off the finer pieces. It is the closest I will get to doing an archeological dig! Because the lamp was still very fragile, I used a finishing spray to make the lamp more durable and resistant to scratches.
