Saving Leningrad
VFX breakdown
Feature film directed by Aleksey Kozlov tells the story based on the tragedy happened in the year 1941 on the Ladozhskoe lake. The Barge (number 725) was evacuating people from the blockade Leningrad. But it was overloaded and has got into a heavy storm. It has sank 17th of September 1941 bringing away more then 1000 lifes.
Our team was responsible for the most sophisticate sequence "the storm". There was built a huge bluescreen stage with a part of the ship on a moving platform rig allowing actors to feel themselves as on a real ship in storm with full range of SFX: giant waves, rain, wind and the flashlights.
We ha two types of tasks:
- 11 fullCG shots with barge and a tow pulling it through the storm
- process 60 shots with actors on the bluescreen filmed on stage
Assets
We`ve created 2 ships: barge and tow. The Barge was heavy overloaded with people and laguage. Luckely we didn`t see the crowds of people hiding in the hold but there were lots of suitcases, crates, sacks and even car and a piono on top of it. To fill its deck with all this stuff we used our proprietary toolset Taiga(intilllegent artistic instaces we`ve devolped for T34 movie).
