‹I want to draw him› is a publication about the Oeuvre of the artist

Narine Grigoryan-Scheidler. Throughout the concept and thanks to the form of the book, the reader can navigate through the most crucial stages of

the life of this German artist with Armenian roots: her personal story, the exploration of paper and tools, besides her most relevant work of art,

the sketches of human figures.

This book contains sketches that the artist made during the last twenty

years in the streets of Yerevan, Paris, and Basel. These cities influenced not only her life but also the development and the evolution of her style. Narine's drawings tell us human stories, which she observed and depicted, show the uniqueness of their characters and relationships. Her drawings represent one of a kind of visual communication and as it seems even the most insignificant details in her sketches allow the viewer to feel the atmosphere of the city, different specialties of human behavior and their culture of communication. It becomes a milestone for our concept. The next crucial point was to keep the original colours and qualities of the sketch paper. Therefore, the chapters in this book have different tints because they correspond with each period of the artist's life. We applied the transparent paper to create layered images to show how we can interpret human emotions in different ways and what impact it could have on our perception of the relationships.

This project was conceived and produced together with Natalia Peralta Duran during the course Art Direction ‹The Book as Exhibition› led by Marion Fink at HGK FHNW in Basel. It wants to pursue the above question by developing a catalogue for an individually chosen artist, photographer or curated exhibition. The aim is to abandon the characteristics of conventional catalogues and instead to open a quasi-space between the gallery art and the mass-produced book object.
