Martina Todorova Asplund's profile

Societal family culture, editorial illustration

For several magazines of pulishing house Verbum's article service, about family constellations, traditions and culture, what is different now from then? This particular article discusses the changing social and traditional patterns in society. I was handed complete creative freedom in this project (besides size) and got to interpret the material into a fitting motif.

Here is one of the initial sketches where I brainstorm different elements and try to tie in them together.
Sketching stage. Determining the rough composition, idea, and figures.
Scanning stage. The linework and composition are practically done. You can still see the graphite sketch beneath. I usually erase all the graphite once I'm finished inking, but this time around I decided to only lightly erase the sketch. This gave me a more organic feel of the illustration.
Coloring and finishing stage. The decorative smoke-like element was handdrawn on a separate piece, and got added last. It symbolises a red thread through the changing generations and traditions. (also, it looked cool to me)
In this particular project I limited myself to a simple color palette since the multitude of figures could otherwise give a chaotic impression. The customer was happy with it!
Thanks for checking this project out!
