The background of the research is set in an existing old residential area that is facing demolishment in Shanghai. The goal is to read and evaluate the built environment and the real lives happened in that area and try to explore problems and potential solutions for future improvements. 

This investigation encourages to rethink the current model of urban development in Shanghai and recognize promising cases of socio-technical innovation that are at the same time, solutions to some current problems and meaningful steps towards a sustainable society.

Based on above idea, this research will focus on using design to promote and improve specific sets of products, services and communications which embedded in people’s daily life to support these sustainable ways of living.
