Collaborated with Tate modern (2017)
The animation is based on an audio clip of the artist Don McCullin.
My visual concept comes from his works and his feeling about the memory of wars. This animation begins as a journey of artist’ memory which always haunts him. He said “it is like falling into a very deep ocean”, so I use dark blue color and red color from his workplace darkroom. I also add some texture to make the images come alive.
The concept comes from his photographs, using bowling ball broke the bottles to present killing in the war field, and the broken pieces will turn to shoes because I can find many shoes in his photographs as beside someone dead, or on an empty road.
I also want to convey his guilt and his conflict feeling to the audience. So, in the end, there is a pair of artist's eyes under the water to watching himself. It means he cannot forget those people he shot.
