Burning Man 2016
Da Vinci's Workshop
This year I had the privilege of the gift of flight. Just before sunrise we boarded a small six-seater. Captain Kirk, our pilot, took us in loops around the city. It was still the beginning of the event, so much of the art is incomplete, including the Man and Temple. But we got amazing views of not just the event, but the surrounding environment, including the local hot springs and Old Razorback Mountain.
An unforgiving environment

The Man

One of the more ambitious designs, it was meant to rotate around a horizontal axis, like he was doing cartwheels. But the bolts sheered and it was all the builders could go to get him upright for the rest of the event. Inspired by Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man
The Temple
by David Best and the Temple Crew

Inspired by the architecture of Nepal that David saw during his visit to help rebuild after the devastating earthquake. Unlike most temples, this one was not dedicated to anything, such as past temples named for the stars or grace. This is one of my very favorite designs The wood was aged to be black in stark contrast to the playa during the day. At night, it's distinct lights made it instantly recognizable for a distance.
