Best of my Sony A58
I've had my Sony A58 for over 3 years now. It was already old when I got it, but I was new to photography so it was amazing to me. Now, I've outgrown the capabilities of the camera a little bit (at least, I like to think so). For Christmas, I got a Sony A7iii, a MUCH better camera. While I'm excited to take pictures with it, I also want to honor the camera that got me started. Here is the best of my Sony A58.
This was extremely random. I was coming home from class one evening to this beautiful sky. My camera was still in my room, so I had to grab it real quick and then hop over to a little field behind our clubhouse. I maybe had 10-20 minutes to capture this shot. I did not boost the colors as much you might think I did.
This night photo was an extra credit taken for my photography class. I've always wanted a postcard-esc photo of Louisville, and here I think I got it. I'll have to try again with my new camera to see if I can get an even sharper image.
For the Depth of Field project we had to take both a shallow and great DOF photo. This was my shallow, used to emphasize the epic rivalry behind both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul. Anyone familiar with Star Wars can instantly see the levels of depth this photo presents. At the end of the semester, I submitted this to the Jury competition the school hosts, it won the best Depth of Field.
This photo of my cat is very special to me. This was taken in the months leading up to his death. These were not pleasant times for him; as his body shut down, he was often in some sort of pain or discomfort. However, one day I was able to catch him peacefully sleeping on the couch. I use this photo to remember the comfort and companionship he gave me throughout my youth.
This was taken at a skate park downtown. The orange bit casting the shadows is one of those "M" things you found out in such parks. This picture was taken for our Light and Colors project in school. This one was specifically for complementary colors. It won an honorable mention for the Jury competition at the end of the semester.
My Scout Troop and I went to Canada to visit Niagara Falls a few years ago. While out on that trip, we visited one of the bays. That is where this shot was taken. It's a personal favorite of mine.
Also in Canada, I captured this image of some extremely interesting layered clouds. It has a diagonal flow with a very soft look that I quite like.
One of my earliest "good" images, I took this at a local campground sometime in the morning. The light was hard and spotty, creating some awesome colors and contrast. However, if I were to take this today, the dandelion would be more in focus.
YES! THE ECLIPSE! Nuff said.
My parents and I went to visit some family in Colorado a couple years ago. As one of the activities, we went to the Garden of the Gods. I got a bunch of photos out there, but this one is my favorite.
I caught this image at a local airshow. Originally it was overexposed but when I brought it back down I was able to get a surprising amount of detail. I don't think its anything super special, but I really like the movement in this shot.
At the same airshow, I captured this paratrooper. It's unconventional, but instead of framing him closer in the image, I zoomed out so you could see the endless sea of clouds he sails across the reach the ground. It has an element of solitude that I like.
This was a very cloudy sunrise that I was able to get. The same one as below actually, just at a different time. It has kind of an abstract look to it, with an otherworldly atmosphere. It feels like something you would capture from one of the gas giants in the solar system, not Earth.
Same Sunrise as before, the clouds really make this shot awesome. There is layering, depth and texture all the way through. I'm quite fond of this shot.
During a campout in South Carolina, we canoed out to a small, isolated island. It was infested with swampy streams, tall, big leafed plants, with its fair share of bugs. Although, it was worth it, since we had a couple of big tree houses that we stayed in. Under one of them, was this epic spider. That is the guy in the image above. My only regret is that I couldn't get his whole leg in focus.
I don't consider this a very artsy photo like I normally attempt to take. However, anyone I show this photo too thinks its really cool. I mean, come on, who sees a cool waterfall like this and thinks "lets get a guy with an umbrella under there!"

Fun fact, this was taken with an 8 second long exposure. This was so I could get that cool water streaming effect. Notice how the guy under the umbrella is barely out of focus. Could you stay THAT still for 8 seconds?
