Organic Architecture

Organic Architecture - 2011 - Dousman, WI
A leaf sprouts from one central point on the branch. It grows throughout the season spreading and reaching out to the sun. The great room is the central point of this design, it is the most important space and the heart of
the home. From this space the wings of the building  grow out into the surrounding landscape. Not only is the building growing out but the landscape is growing into the built environment. The hillside spills into the back terrace and seeps into the house with the aid of the corner windows. Stone flooring is used to connect the inside and the outside allowing nature to step into the home. Beautiful  views of the surrounding land are framed by large windows throughout the living spaces. Bamboo and vines located inside the home continue the connection to  the landscape. Clerestory windows promote daylight into the home as well as aid in natural ventilation. With these features integrated into the design the occupants of the home feel engulfed in the landscape.
Roof Plan
Show the southern orientation of the home and location just south of a hill. The surrounding trees provide shade and protection from the elements.
Floor Plans
Elevations combined into panaramic view
The angled roofs allow for sunlight to enter the front of the home and indirect light to enter from the back of the home. Metal roofing was selected to allow for rainwater harvesting. Trellis along the southern facade filter summer sunlight through the use of vegetation.
Perspective from Entrance looking into kitchen and dining rooms
Open floor plan allow spaces to flow into one another. Multiple windows allow for views out into the beautiful landscape.
Back perspective of home
The clerestory windows facing north allow for indirect daylight to filter into the living spaces. An outdoor space is created between the two wings of the home and center on the hearth with an outdoor fireplace. This provides a cool outdoor space during hot summer days.
Great room perspective, entrance in the background
Shows the large amount of southern exposure and daylight filtering into the space. A large overhang provides protection from the hot summer sun but the low angle winter sun is still able to enter the space,
North-South Cross Section
Displays the flow between indoor and outdoor spaces with terraces and walkout spaces. The hill to the north protects the home from cold winter winds. A rain garden behind the home provides beauty as well as channeling the runoff from the hill around the home.
