Top-class speakers from the creative scene, topics that always meet the ravages of time and an insight into the work of the students of the Rheinische Fachhochschule in Cologne: Since 2007, Forum Mediendesign has thrilled both its guests and the speakers with a diverse program and informative, humorous, but also critical engagement with the spectrum of design. Under the direction of Prof. Martin Teschner, the event was conceived and fully organized from 2007 to 2018, which today can be described as the largest regular design conference organized by a university in Germany.
Among the guests are well-known names from the industry, such as Mike Meiré (Meiré & Meiré), Achim Schaffrinna (design diary) or Paul Ripke (photographer). Each year, the event follows a specific motto, to which the topics and guests are tailored. At the same time, the speakers always have an eye on the connection between social, technological and creative perspectives. The event had its home since 2008 in the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, 2018 broke the forum media design on new shores, namely the Wallraf-Richartz Museum
in Cologne; this year's (2018) motto was "digital sub optimal".

Under this title, the 11th Forum Media Design dealt with the multiple entanglement of three current topics: humanity, technology and media. Central questions were: What role does analog, hand-made design play in the context of digitization and algorithms? What is the current relationship between commercial mainstream and peripheral subcultures? What are the perspectives of Artificial Intelligence? And what is social responsibility of designers in this dynamic process, how can they do justice to it? Speakers such as Erik Spiekermann, Mike Meiré, Edel Rodriguez, Oliver Scheibler and more give lectures on these current topics.
