A map of the Tavnazian Archipelago, from Final Fantasy XI. It's a land filled with forests and peaceful meadows. Complete with an abandoned city, wooden structures, waterfalls, bridges, gates, tunnels and floating islands.
I colored the parts where you can walk in a more yellowy shade of green:
I've kept the map as authentic as I could by adding structures and objects that you'll find in-game, as well as making areas look like their in-game counterpart:
Special care went into the old, abandoned city of Tavnazia. I recreated a few dilapidated buildings, overgrown with moss, included fog and added a lighter tint to the whole thing, to make it appear more rocky:
Since Tavnazia is now in ruins, the inhabitants live in the Tavnazian Safehold. You can see some banners poking through the hole:
I also spent quite some time getting the waterfall just right:
Then I added another waterfall, and a bridge. This part is not on the map, but the only way that it can make sense would be to have a crossing over the river. And since there's a known height difference, the logical conclusion was to have a waterfall there:
This map was different from my previous work, in that I wanted full coverage. I did black out some areas as to not block certain routes:
Apart from those few spots, I covered the entire known archipelago. Lots of work went into textures, colors, scaling and making sure things never got too detailed. Adding 1000+ trees and making them feel like forests was also quite a task.
The end result is a giant map brimming with objects. To appreciate it in all its detailed glory, here is a 13 megabyte PNG, 6000 pixels wide image.
And to give you a hint of the amount of planning that went into this, here's a GIF that shows a few of the steps.
