Weerwaterbridge

Winning competition design by Quist Wintermans Architekten.

The Weerwaterbridge The municipality of Almere (NL) follows the principle of the Growing Green Cities for the development of the city. This is a movement that wants to make the lives of city dwellers in all respects more sustainable, greener, healthier and more attractive. In shaping the bridge we have been inspired by nature and its flowing forms. This is recognisable by the winding bridge route, the elegant bridge deck construction and the graceful pillars. We integrate the Growing Green Cities themes of Nutrition, Greening, Health and Energy production within stay places on the bridge. The balustrade reminds in shape of cane stems while the bamboo seating elements are enriched with a mix of grasses and canola flowers.

The bridge will be part of a circular route around the lake area (Weerwater). This route will take cyclists and pedestrians along the along the banks of the Weerwater, the city center of Almere and the Floriade district. The last is The 2022 World Expo on Horticulture ‘Floriade’. Knowledge, products and technologies from the agricultural and horticultural sectors are being used to find solutions to urgent and global urbanization issues, related to food, energy, water and health. The innovations will be showcased at the Floriade and it’s legacy: a new green healthy city district. The Weerwaterbridge forms a prominent entrance to this new city district.
