Established in the late 1940s, Toys for Tots collects new toys and distributes them to seven million children from disadvantaged backgrounds across the United States every year during the holiday season. The organization was founded by Major Bill Hendricks, a member of the Marine Corps Reserve, and his wife.
In the first year of operation, Toys for Tots collected nearly 5,000 toys for children in the Los Angeles area. The program was soon under the management of the Marine Corps Reserve, which helped establish a nationwide network of toy collection and distribution.
After more than 70 years and millions of donated toys, Toys for Tots is one of the largest children’s charities in the nation and has garnered partnerships with large toy companies, including Hasbro and Build-A-Bear.
