After analysing carefully my client's requests, I sketched my first design idea. Simple, but efficient.

To give more than one option to my client, I sketched another idea, which has a similar concept although it does not fold as the previous one.

Considering that my client shares a room with other 3 people, my design idea is a chair that becomes a sofa, made of recycled materials which is something my client highlighted in our conversation.

Here is a new alternative to the legs to make the seat more comfortable.

I tested and designed different shapes to make the chair as comfortable as possible.

To prevent the legs from spinning, I applied a block and bolt that would stop it from doing that.

Initially printed with the 3D printer, but after several tests it broke because it was too small.

Therefore I changed size and material to make it stronger. I used a router to make it more precise and accurate.

Before making the actual box where both the legs and the back-rest would stay, I made several models to test size and weight.

At the end, the box has only one compartment where the legs and seat bit fit. I created a 'window' so the client can see what it is inside the box and it looks a bit more like a chair.

With a router, I curved off the corners to make them smoother and prevent the client from getting hurt.

To make the box lighter, I removed the back-rest compartment and tested way to attach it to the main box. My final decision was to create a groove to allow the client to adjust the cushion position. To move it up and down I sketched, tested then made different handles.

I made the final handle using a 3D printer.

To attach the back-rest I used magnets.

After several tests the wooden block was not strong enough to support the weight, therefore I made it in aluminium to let longer. To make the seat bit more comfortable, I routed every acrylic bit.

To prevent the chair from slipping, I designed and printed feet in a 3D printer.

This is the final product.
