Automotive Engineer
Europe's automotive engineering magazine
Automotive engineers are highly educated, logical individuals who place more importance on authoritative information than aesthetics. They work in a sophisticated and highly visual industry making full use of cutting edge software and design techniques. They have little time to spare yet appreciate creativity. Add to this the tight budget contraints of b2b publishing and the redesign of Automative Engineer magazine had to work very hard on a number of different levels.

Fonts were all-important. Antenna's family enabled me to create a strong identity while providing enough choice of weights to clearly signpost the different sections of the magazine. Font shape was important, too. The curves of the Antenna font reflects the subject matter, creating shapes that emulate those of the vehicles and their component parts. Miller Text is a modern take on traditional body copy while Miller Headline on feature pages provided the opportunity to break out of the usual b2b habit of using the same headline font throughout. It also offers a visual lift to what can sometimes be highly technical features.

Different grids help the ebb and flow of the magazine. Creative picture cropping makes otherwise ordinary supplied pictures more interesting while the budget for pictures is used effectively to create the big hit spreads and multi-page features.

Compared with its previous incarnation Automotive Engineer underwent a night and day change, boosting its position in the marketplace and increasing advertising revenue.

What follows are examples of every section of the magazine to give the impression of how the editorial flowed.
