They could have gone down the predictable and boring route and had him win the fight, but him getting his ass kicked actually led to character development for Max, as well as for Steve. Agreed. He’s not a Mary Sue. He doesn’t always win, doesn’t always get the girl, occasionally gets his shit kicked in. But then he learns and does the right thing anyway. That’s what makes him great. Ok so my ex and I have an ongoing dispute about the Name of the Wind series- I’m of the opinion that Kvothe is 100% a Mary Sue (and a predictably boring character at that), while she is totally fine with him being the best at everything, mastering languages in a day, dashing and distinctive looking etc
