Legally Bound: Law, Environment and Design Lab

The project spanned over one semester (4 months) and involved us to engage with the camel maldhari community in kutch and use creative communication to enable them to get ecological justice - help them claim their rights and access over their land. The project involved mapping community values, social, cultural, ecological by collecting data through field interviews and secondary research. The use of design tools in research and analysis of  data aided in unpacking the complexity of the environment the community lived in. The outcome was focused around the use of various forms of creative media for advocacy and capacity building through the Forest Rights Act.
Over the course of 4 months, it was understood that the first step to achieving ecological justice was to get the community to become aware of their own rights. The focus therefore became building an awareness about the Forest Rights Act. For this we decided to come up with a board game that can explore various dynamics and power play involved in the Forest Rights Act.

The following game illustrates how the Forest Rights Act can be understood by play.
