Emergency Shelter Group Project

Course: Methods and Materials of Construction
Professor: Alex Melvin
Work Time: 7 Weeks

Description: This was a collaborative design project. The class worked as a team to develop a design for a modular housing system to provide emergency shelter for disaster relief. A complete set of construction drawings consisting of floor plans, elevations, sections, site plans, and framing plans at 3/4"=1'-0" were developed. Additional cardboard and basswood (stick- framed) models were built to present the modular design ideas. Rough sawn wood was planed, jointed, ripped on the table saw, and cut to length in the wood shop. A final structure was constructed at half scale.

Requirements:
- 120 square feet maximum
- Design should employ a wood framed structural system composed of dimensional lumber
- House 2 people per module
- Aggregate to connect 2 or more modules
