‘Dark Room’ is a mix of sculpture and painting made with various media. It is a three-dimensional piece of art made in high relief technique. I wanted to focus on the visual play between forms and textures rather than the narrative behind it.

This picture depicts a camera lens in a dark room. It is finished in a solid red color to convey the atmosphere of a dark room. I used a different perspective of a well-known object by showing only a cropped piece of it. As a small fragment separated from the full puzzle, this point of view excites the imagination. My inspiration came from my childhood. I loved puzzles, and I considered each piece an independent object. This is the perspective I hoped to achieve through ‘Dark Room’.

Looking at this work, you can complete it in your imagination or even find your own meaning. It is a dramatic image that toys with light and shadow. You can also touch and feel it, making it more physical, tangible and real.

I started the art-making process on this work by gluing thick cuts of foam to a flat wood background. This allowed me to achieve a massive high relief, which is a base for the layers of plaster and color that follow. I continued to sculpt by adding acrylic plaster and shaped it with a palette knife. This process created various textures, geometric forms, stripes and lines. After the sculpting was finished, I coated it with a vibrant, ruby red paint. The entire process took several months.
