A HOUSE UNDER VAULTS

|EN| Living under vaults

The roof makes the house. It determines the grid, partitions the volumes and defines the two arms of a L shaped house. It is a succession of vaults, five for the housing, one for the accesses and a long one for the restaurant. They extend lengthwise and are supported by a simple series of pillars.

On the street side, the blind wall in the lower part supports the house, while allowing the rest to breathe by transparency, letting the vaults appear as inhabited roofs. Behind this wall are arranged the servant spaces, visually isolated from the street, preventing from seeing and being seen.

A bay creates access to the restaurant, which is covered as a "passage" between street and garden. In double height, it connects with the restaurant. A succession of thresholds leads to the house. We then walk through a ground floor punctuated by the grid that reveals visual openings onto the garden.

Onto which the main rooms open up, ending up on a double height that responds to the void that one crossed to enter.
In the façade, a series of stretched pillars make the transition between the interior and the exterior, the ground is extended first, the garden begins when one is more under cover. This structural thickness is repeated throughout the house to bring zenithal light into the windowless spaces and to illuminate the restaurant kitchens.

Upstairs, each child has his own territory, his own roof. The light highlights the volume of the spaces, giving the impression that the roof floats and extends outwards, in conversation with the sky. The vaults delimit the spaces, independently of the layout of the partitions, with the light streaming over them. The double-height living room connects the two levels that make up the house, showing what constitutes the identity of the project, the undulating roof.
