U, Maronna!

U, Maronna! is a calendar project that was inspired by a trip to Napoli this year. "Maronna" means Madonna, or Mary (mother of Jesus) in Neapolitan dialect. I was really moved by all the small temples that can be found just about everywhere in the city, the mixing of pagan and sacred, deceased family members photos near paintings of equally cherished and familiar local deities.
Besides the much loved Maronna (also called La Bruna because of her brown Neapolitan locks), San Gennaro (patron saint of Napoli) and Maradona also make an apparition. Diego Maradona has become a sort of patron saint in the city and the many paintings and photos that can be found across town really mirror the way religious characters are also depicted - the ultimate syncretism.
The calendar was screen-printed and made by hand in December 2018.
