Dusty's VINYL SHOP
Actually, I was only asked to create the logo for Dusty's, but basically had a good feeling about the general look I wanted it to have. The pretty straightforward services, the classic vinyl store yet updated, a few gadgets, the store mentality...
I'm a logo-designer, not a hand lettering artist, but I sometimes feel the opportunity to create a hand lettered word mark because it's a match. I've always been a fan of the lettering in the 'Champion' logo, although I find it a little too generic, and I think even the small imperfections in a hand lettered logo make it what it is, and I especially never try over-thinking the 'rules' when it comes to a logo.
For instance, the small 's' is not what it should be, but after a while it starts becoming thát part of the logo. It even started to look like the 's' and the apostrophe at the same time to me.
I think the logo really suits the company it was made for, and like I said, it was an idea purely based on the vibe of what I thought would be best. I later integrated the veneer elements in the mock-ups, and it only made the 'fancy roughness' of the concept come to live even more.
Dusty's Shifter Gadget
This little switching gadget is a combination of a USB-stick (keep your digital music collection with you at all time) and a record needle duster.
It's not in production, just an idea I wanted to share during the presentation of the brand identity.
I often make these designs just to put my creativity or imagination in the spotlight, and also to simply add them to my work.
Sometimes (not for Dusty's) it's unsuitable or... too 'boring' to add to a portfolio, so I always try creating at least one thing I can show about every job I've done.
I'm no 3D artist, but I sometimes like to practice my basic skills and make personalised mock-ups and what not. Although I gladly leave the real stuff to the pros, I really love losing myself in the creative process. I usually make a plain B&W render and edit it in photoshop, or even just use it as a guideline for sketches.
Sincerely yours
