Service Design to reduce water consumption

Adding value to a smart water solution through the creation of sustainable services
++ The objective
This project was commissioned by a multinational telecom company. They wanted to build in partnership with one of the big players of the water sector a smart water solution that could help reduce water consumption.

++ The design process
Designing a model on water flow management: from water to data to services
Researching was the first step of the design process and it was key to understand the complexity of the water landscape. Next, places and physical infrastructure were mapped out and IoT devices were placed across the whole water supply system from the upstream to the downstream. Then, we started to ideate how data captured by those devices was aggregated and transformed into insights. And finally, those insights were used to create services that could reduce water and energy usage and could benefit all actors of the ecosystem.

Framing real problems and opportunities
We conducted interviews to multiple actors of the ecosystem -device manufacturers, platform and service providers, city councils and domestic consumers- to frame real problems and uncover opportunities.
Collaboration to deliver value
After having synthesised the insights extracted from the interviews, it was the right time to start working collaboratively with external partners, internal departments and countries. Several service design workshops were organised and people with different backgrounds and knowledge worked together to deliver value in the form of services to reduce water consumption and make the water supply more sustainable and efficient.
