Mason and the Magic Cape

Mason and the Magic Cape
An illustrated children's book, made for a self publishing author.
The first part of every project is planning. I started out by doing some character tests for approval. Once we are happy with the characters, I begin taking my client's text and visualizing it in a storyboard. This shows the rough layout of the book, and let's me and the client imagine how the story will flow in a two page format. I also plan where the text will go during this stage.
Once all of the spreads are planned, I begin painting. I draw each image on paper then trace onto watercolor paper. If I am not happy with my initial plan in the story board, I may do some more thumbnail sketches or color comps to refine the design of the page.
Once the paintings are done, I scan them and edit them in Photoshop. The editing stage includes fixing the colors to match my paintings, touch ups and clean up. Below are my favorite finished images from the book.
