Our Home Here is a film about parallel stories of broken relationships between parents and their children striving for the American Dream - all revolving around one explosive night at a fast food joint in a small town Texas. What was important to the director is to visualize the theme of the different people and their lives within a society & how it can be so complex. She wanted to highlight/capture the individuality and aura of each character (4 main characters, each from a different race) and visually bring this to life in a way that will emotionally intrigue the viewer - like a piece of art.
So, we decided to keep it quite abstract, using various handmade, real & raw textures/mark-making in combination with bright colours to communicate the emotional/human aspect and accentuate each character's uniqueness. The slightly more aggressive neutral-coloured 'scratch' joins them but also evokes a definite feeling of angst and desperation to hold things together. The Title typography was placed to feel like it's trying to 'cling' to the image but simultaneously appears 'broken'/separated by the image.
