MACBA - THE HERMETIC BELL

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) contacted us to create the graphic image of "The Hermetic Bell", an installation that the artist Francesc Torres had created exclusively for the museum, which was formed from his personal archive of objects donated to the museum. Torres is a plastic artist, curator and essayist.

This artistic installation is a sort of nostalgic entomology, "sediments of memory"formed by numerous objects that the artist has been collecting since childhood. Objects that act as silent testimonies of both recent history and personal history. An anthropological archive in which we find everything from toys to souvenirs, or the remains of military conflicts.

As the artist said, "this has all fallen down to fill several attics and this museum space." In this sense, the visual identity of the exhibition works as a reverberation of this "falling" of objects that "fill attics" and exhibition spaces, forming layers of experiences and memories. The carefully chosen pieces create a visual impact that functions as an orderly accumulation wherein the artist's intimate memory contaminates the graphic image.

A Barcelona taxi's door as a central element and spatial reference point welcoming us both graphically and in terms of the exhibition. Masks of a bygone age and faraway places. Bombs, guns, bullets, and traces of ancient conflicts that the artist did not experience. Toy cars, irreverent souvenirs, family photographs, graphic documents, prehistoric tools that shape a constellation of objects reminiscent of the Wunderkammern or Cabinet of Wonders. A window to memory through objects.
