Cluck Clock

By Laura Jaramillo, Tommy Valenti, Kennan Liu and Daphne Do

Cluck was a collaborative design project between four RISD students in the Department of Furniture Design. Our mutual desire to create a fun, lovable, tabletop or desk companion led us to the creation of Cluck. Chickens have a circadian cycle that allows them to anticipate daily cycles like the sunrise. This allows roosters to crow at dawn. Chickens have their own internal clocks and we wanted to make an actual clock to embody this idea of time telling. Blending form and function between a chicken and clock, the two black dots function as eyes and also 3 o’clock and 9 o'clock indicators. The red clock hands double as chicken beaks that open and close throughout the day. The Cluck is available in all white or with partially exposed and carefully considered wood grain.

Materials:  Hickory Wood, Plexiglass Acrylic, Time Pieces, Gesso, Acrylic Paint, PolyWhey

Dimension:  3.5'' x 3.5'' x 4.4'' (5.5'' with comb) inches

Qualitative study of objects that described the form language and function of Cluck.

Process images throughout construction. The wood was planed, milled, and then hand routered with a laser cut birch plywood template. Once the cavity was made, two halves of the clock were glued together. They were then cut into their final shape on the table saw, drilled, and sanded. They were painted with white gesso, their eyes with black acrylic and sealed with Polywhey. The clock hands and comb on the roosters were made by laser cutting red plexiglass acrylic on the laser cutter.
We are currently working on making Clucks more cost and time efficient with the use of a CNC router and spray finish techniques. Please contact one of us if you have any inquiries about the project or want to chat about chickens!
Thank you!
