"My Pixelated Period by Alexander Crookshanks" For this series entitled, "My Pixelated Period," I create digital illustrations, or paintings, out of my desire to bridge digital art and more traditional art. I believe that these "paintings" bridge the gap between digital and traditional by the way they are still painterly even though they have been completely created on an iPhone or iPad with only my fingertip as the "brush".  The iPhone and iPad have become more than popular tech-toys.  They serve as a tool for many, as calculator, as television, as camera.  For me they have become tools for painting. And with the assistance of many applications, I am able to create a new body of work that is not static.  In contrast to the more traditional forms of painting that are primarily lit from the front (e.g, over head lighting), images in "My Pixaleted Period" are best viewed when back-lit.  As such, they move, change, and meld to the environment of the viewer depending on where the image is viewed. My palette tends to reside in the primary. I choose this palette often as an homage to pop art. Being a graphic designer by trade, I'm drawn to loud colors with high contrasts. And using a mini-computer, my iPhone/iPad, it seems appropriate, to me, to keep the colors bright and eye-catching.  I consider a piece successful when it emotes something from the viewer. When the piece communicates independent of a verbal statement is a success. The pieces in this series, "My Pixelated Period," echo the colorful facets of my life: home, work, and recreation.
