The Beginnings of Viva ExCon

The Visayas Islands Visual Arts Exhibition and Conference was an initiative of the Black Artists in Asia (BAA) in Bacolod, Negros Occidental in 1990, during the height of the restoration of democracy and the transition to the Cory administration. This change would trickle down to the direction of the regional art scene. Conceived by Norberto Roldan shortly after BAA’s major exhibition Images of the Continuing Struggle, which he organized and curated at Art Space and First Draft, both independent art spaces in Sydney in 1989, the Visayas Islands Visual Arts Exhibition and Conference (VIVA ExCon) was intended to be a springboard to promote regional art while pursuing networking and collaborations with progressive art communities.
