This was my very first encounter with data visualization and it happened in 2005, when I got together with a group of colleagues from various disciplines to collaborate on a project which aimed to develop a strategy for visualizing complex data in a custom created 3D virtual environment. This eventually developed into a poster which we presented at the Towards a Science of Consciousness Conference held in Tucson, in 2006.
In hindsight, now that I am far more familiar with the requirements of the field, there are a lot of problems with this. Probably the biggest one is that the representational system  which I worked upon (that was my part of the job) was way too complex. But it is this complexity which made for some good visuals. So, I am putting them here for their pyrotechnical value rather than their scientific valor ;-)...
You can read the abstract and see a very large size of the poster shown below here.

Layers of data embedded into data cubes.
Simulated proposal for remote data input/control device.

This may look legitimate at first glance, but actually there are a lot of things wrong with it, which any engineer who looks at it will spot immediately. I did this very early on in my collaboration with the CS crowd. If I were to re-do this today, it would be different. Between then and now I "learned" how such a thing would actually work. And a very challenging process it was!
