LOGLINE: A WOMAN ON A BLIND DATE GETS BLINDSIDED WHEN HER DATE’S MOM CRASHES THEIR BRUNCH.
EXT. SAVANNAH RESTAURANT - EARLY AFTERNOON
Café style. Chairs with umbrella covered tables sit parallel to the restaurant. Cars parked along the street. BRITTANY (29), sophisticated looking black woman, dressed in
semi-casual clothes.
She nervously looks around until she sees... MICHAEL (20s), overdressed but handsome, sits at a table. Brittany approaches him.
BRITTANY
Michael?
Michael abruptly looks up and lets out a nervous chuckle.
MICHAEL
Yes, I am.
He continues staring at her. It’s a little awkward.
BRITTANY
Pleased to me you.
Michael jumps up to pull out her chair before she does.
MICHAEL
My bad, you’ll have to excuse me.
It’s been a while...
Michael wrestles a bit to loosen the chair’s leg out of a crack.
MICHAEL (CONT’D)
Not a while-while, just a little while.
You’re gorgeous by the way.
Brittany nervously laughs and takes her seat.
MICHAEL (CONT’D)
I took the liberty of ordering for us.
BRITTANY
Oooh, noooo. That’s not a chivalrous thing anymore. Or ever?
MICHAEL
Not even Mushroom Florentine, with a side of garlic green beans?
Brittany smiles slightly impressed.
MICHAEL (CONT’D)
I also ordered you a Lavender Mint Ice tea.
BRITTANY
I see you did your research.
Brittany playfully points her fork at Michael.
BRITTANY (CONT’D)
Usually I don’t go for the mysteriously vague man without a
profile photo, but so far it’s working in my favor.
Michael laughs smoothing out his suit. They grab their glass and lightly tap them together in a silent toast. Across the street, VYE (40s) cougar like attire and weave
fans herself with a notepad. She approaches them.
VYE
Michael!
WAITRESS arrives and plates the table. Michael ducks in front of Waitress, embarrassed. Brittany looks from Michael to Vye, confused. Michael wipes his forehead with the tablecloth.
VYE (CONT’D)
Michael!
BRITTANY
Umm, Why is that woman calling you?
Vye slams the notebook on the table and adjusts her weave.
VYE
It is hotter than hell out here! Why didn’t you get a table inside?
MICHAEL
How’d you find me?
Vye holds up her i-phone. Brittany discreetly glances around to see if anyone is watching.
VYE
Phone tracker.
Vye gives Brittany a good look over.
VYE (CONT’D)
Uhm. I see why you tried to ditch me. She’s pretty.
Brittany’s mouth gapes open. She earnestly looks to Michael.
MICHAEL
You can’t keep doing this!
Vye pulls up a chair, grabs Michael’s glass of water and takes a long sip. Michael drops his head in shame.
VYE
You know we always do this together! Team work makes our dream
work, Baby!
BRITTANY
Ooooh my gosh!
Brittany searches for her keys.
MICHAEL
MOM! I don’t need your help anymore!
Brittany’s head jerks up, her face furrowed with even more disgust.
BRITTANY
Mom?
Vye cups Michael’s hand.
VYE
Michael you’ve always needed my wisdom. You’re mama’s boy.
MICHAEL
Not anymore!
Michael pulls his hand away. Vye ignores him and skims her notepad.
MICHAEL (CONT’D)
Brittany...
Brittany avoids eye contact and fervently shakes her head no. She clutches her purse against her chest.
VYE
So, Miss PYT, Michael only brings in $30,000 a
year but he works his butt off!
What you bringing to the table? It’s gotta match 30 at the least.
Brittany closes her eyes and rocks back and forth.
VYE (CONT’D)
Is she deaf? That might not be bad for you, Michael.
MICHAEL
I’m cutting the umbilical cord! Right now. I am a man, Ma! I can
handle my own love life. You need to leave.
BRITTANY
Actually, I’m leaving, so stay...do whatever it is you all do.
Vye chews off a piece of bread from the loaf.
BRITTANY (CONT’D)
This was just an innocent, first blind brunch.
VYE
Was? Uh-oh. Mike.
Waitress arrives with a ‘to go container’. Brittany shoves a bill in her hand. Waitress places her food in container.
VYE (CONT’D)
She’s not gon’ make the cut, Baby.
Vye takes out her pen and threatens to place an “X” through her notepad.
Insert Notepad: A list of names scratched out sit above Brittany’s name. Vye draws a line next to the first letter in Brittany’s name and looks at Michael. Michael glares at Vye then turns to the Waitress...
MICHAEL
Mine also.
Waitress nods and puts his food in a container. Brittany perks up. Michael slams a wad of cash on the table in front of Vye. He grabs Brittany’s hand and they walk off. Vye watches in disbelief. She slices off a piece of bread and butters it. She slowly chews, and smiles with satisfaction. She reaches for Michael’s glass of water then stops and
motions for the Waitress to bring her one of her own.
