Login and Signup page for a Diary App. I started the process with some hand-drawn sketches of the user flow. I initially had a splash page where the user would choose the action they wanted to take: Login versus Sign up. But I decided that it was one unnecessary click that would get annoying for someone who would be writing in their diary daily!

After working out the flow on paper with messy sketches I created a wire frame of the process so I could program a simple prototype to test the user flow.

You can see here where I indicated buttons in dark gray and how the screen was laid out for flow. Where would the user look? I initially placed the login social media buttons below the login, but realized they wouldn't register to the user as being related so I later decided to move them up.

I am personally a fan of using email, or social media accounts to log into other apps. It is a hassle to keep thinking up new usernames and passwords for each new app, especially if it isn't something where usernames are needed. For a diary app, there would not be any social sharing within the app itself, so why would you need a unique username? If you want to give the user the option, separate the display from the login credentials.

Here is the final design. For a diary app I wanted it targeted to a female audience so chose a color palette that was more feminine but one that also was a bit fun and elicited feelings of secrecy or trust. I choose shades of purple which are calming but also associated with mystery. I also decided on line art icons and details to give a hand drawn feel to give the impression of hand writing in a real-life diary.

I also chose familiar, friendly copy to give an illusion of trusted friend, this is also carried over into the use of all lowercase letters. The same with the use of Revisit to view entries, and Milestones to see highlighted entries, so that you are invited to chronicle events big and small and engage in nostalgia. If developed further it would include a memories function to remind you of events on certain days, prompts to get you writing, and also the ability to upload photos.
