Bending the rules - Principle of art & design

PRINCIPLES OF ART & DESIGN
BY KSHITIJ CHAUDHURI
Title - Bending the rules
Project Schedule - Five weeks
INTRODUCTION
This particular project was quite brief in comparison to others focusing on conceptualizing and then making of a particular object or product. The chosen product for this particular project was a soap dish that i finalized and iterated upon. The opportunity to mold the object from a particular material was given in abundance and also to learn how to make or produce mockups in a particular time frame was a constant reminder and a challenge.

Exploring and considering the different materials for the the soap dish was also important at the stage of making rough models that considered shape and form.
ITERATIONS
The first iteration of the soap dish. Before the start of the iterations I looked at some famous works done by known designers based on similar fields. While iteration I tried keeping the principles that the designer followed but the style such as form and shape was mine alone.
While ideation process I considered factors such as whether it will be a standing soap dish or a flat one, which material to use and if the soap dish will be hallow or not.
Since the artist I chose was more into organic forms or took inspiration from nature, I tried incorporating that element in few of my designs such as the soap dish in form of a footwear. Basically an element that resembled an organic form but still looked unique.
This shows some of the sketches of my 3D models that I made out of paper and the shape, form, color and even the material I had previously taken into consideration such as ceramic or glass.
These sketches show the same thing and the elements a soap dish has but this one was more of a standing soap dish instead of the flat one.
An inside view of the soap dish and the way the soap could be put on top. After a while the water tends to get collected on top which causes high maintenance so I have explained a drainage system through which water can flow easily without unclogging it.
Sketch of the soap dish in comparison with a soap and how one would place it along with the details of drainage in order to stop the accumulation of water.
MOCKUPS
Mockup of a standing soap dish made out of ivory sheets. Here the holes on the surface of the soap dish is the drainage system.
Same concept but here instead of holes the surface of the soap dish is slanted so that water can sweep down.
A much more later soap dish with the same drainage system but wider area for the soap to rest on.
One of my first ideas of a standing soap dish which one can insert in the middle of the space.
This concept was inspired by a soap in a form of a footwear.
