"january 29, 2015/ today we lost a young soul. rip world's most-dopest mouse. may you run through sweet-fields with chirping birds and buzzing-bopping bugs for eternity. xx"
Masha, age 22.
Brooklyn, New York

My 4th-floor Flatbush flat was old, falling apart, cockroaches finding their way in through the bath faucet and bathroom window daily if I forgot to close it--thank you to the neighbour who was adamant about throwing his garbage out his kitchen window into the alley, more often trashing the 3rd-floor fire-escape.
(Oh and then the other neighbour whose apartment the SWAT team broke into at 5am and chased after onto the rooftop.)
Field mice took refuge in the cold Brooklyn winters and I had no heart or energy to wake in the morning each month when the exterminator would stop by to grant him permission to spray.
I'd intricately set trails with books and furniture for the mice to go out the front door or into the closet, catch them in a box and carry them down the stairs and let them out apologizing emphatically that they couldn't be staying rent-free. I thought I got them all out and as preventative measure I was advised to allow the exterminator in. One morning, when I heard a convulsing from behind my suitcase my heart sank. I sent apologies and love for his soul, and wanted to celebrate his life and energetic protection during his transition into another realm. So I held space. I protected his aura as best I could.
