Video Remix: The Consumer

For this video remix I happened upon a very entertaining and quirky compilation of some nineteen fifties and sixties commercials which acted as the base of my inspiration as well as my edited footage. What I attempted to do with the videos and audio I amassed, was to make a message about consumerism and finding false happiness in ads and products. Some of the mid-nineties ads were so strange and extreme in the fake emotions they contained as well as the blatant forcing of the product compared to the ads we have today that I was drawn to using them in my project.

Using Adobe Premiere I stitched together multiple shots from a Colt 45 Beer ad that shows a man who is uninterested in the world around him and used him as my “consumer” sitting at the table. In my video, I tried to make a clear contrast between the world of reality and the world of consumerism and advertising within the consumer's mind. To do so I changed the coloring and saturation of the consumer's clips to black and white and added a hollow sounding wind in the background giving a bleak feel to his reality. On the flip side every time the video transitioned to the ads within the consumer’s mind's eye, the ads are intense, colorful and cheery with prominent music. Due to my inexperience and trouble in Premiere, my remix is more so a low quality and abstract compilation of video than a focused clear message but the process of making a finished video product was enlightening and rewarding as I learned how to use keyframes, mix audio, and create passable transitions in video and audio, and came out with some form of a finished product.
