This tabloid of sin uses various graphical techniques to represent the seven Cardinal sins (lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride). The seven Cardinal sins, also known as the capital vices or the deadly sins, are a classification of vices that were originally used in early Christian teachings to inform patrons about the existence of their ability to sin.

The goal of this project was to create a twenty page tabloid using template that was provided
(11.37 × 14.96") and to design compositions with specific requirements that represent the seven deadly sins. I used a variety of different techniques such as personal photography, stock photos, and various other means to try to capture both the beauty and ugliness of each sin. My ultimate objective was to create a tabloid that celebrates the beauty of these deadly sins.

The requirements for each sin:
Lust: previously printed matter that have been scanned and use B/W or monotone
Gluttony: found or made vector images and use color, B/W, or combination
Greed: personal full color photograph
Sloth: personal photography, duotone or tritone
Wrath: scanned 3D object, B/W or color
Envy: found B/W or color photography and hand generated text
Pride: constructed image

Below are snippets from the tabloid using a mockup file.
Cover, textured paint that uses abstraction to represent fire

Page 2 & 3, introductory text provided in the template

Page 4 & 5, various clippings from magazines and collaged. I really enjoyed being able to place everything and move them around until I got to a composition that I thought represented lust. I like how repetition can add a really neat flare, so I used this idea of repeating lips and removing the eyes of the model to show how lust removes the actual person.

Page 8 & 9, a personal full color photograph. this composition is based on the idea of, "You can't take your wealth to the grave." I created this scene by using a skeleton, a little robe I sewed, glitter, coins, and my backyard. I played with a lot of different poses and ultimately settle on one that gives a direct look at the subject.

Page 16 & 17, a constructed image made from magazines, books, tea lights, red lipstick, and red flower petals. I took spreads in a magazine that featured the same model and used her likeness as my subject for this "person filled with so much pride that they have a shrine for their self." I really enjoyed making this image, it was like the 3D version of a collage.

The completed tabloid was prepared for print and sent to The Newspaper Club in the United Kingdom to be digitally printed on their 55 gsm improved newsprint.
Please feel free to check out my progress here!
And please feel free to flip through the entire digitalized tabloid below! c:
