South African food Inspired Typography
In essence as a creative student I was tasked to create an African inspired type, by exploring the core of Durban (The CBD). As time went on the question posed: “what makes you South African” had played in my head. What makes me a South African can not be defined by 1 element or word but much like the diversity of South Africa, there are various elements and experiences that make me South African. As a foodie, the kitchen was a source of inspiration, growing up my mom would make boerewors and pap, to samosas at events and koeksisters on Sundays. Brands also playing their part especially being the 10cent chappies, or the famous Mrs balls chutney sauce, food was a big part of me being South African. These brands and foods playing a huge role on South Africans. To the celebration braai’s or the comfort food of mom, South Africa has a wealth of culture,
music and food. For my typography, I had focused on the foods and brands related to
South Africa to create letters. These letters being identifiable by any South African.
