How Does Your Body Know What to Do?

Editorial

A strictly type-only book on how our brains communicate with the rest of our bodies.

My design decisions revolve around showing small-scale communication that makes up a bigger picture. I chose to use monospace type as texture, created through repetition and small scale, and alluding to complex computer systems and languages. The small lines of type interact with each other, underscoring the complex communication between the nerves that criss cross our bodies.

Throughout the book, the main copy is broken up and spread-out, asking the reader to take reading leaps to make out their meaning. This interactive action further connects to this underlying theme of communication within the brain.
