Exhibit: The Yellow Brick Road to Woman's Suffrage

Exhibit: The Yellow Brick Road to Woman's Suffrage
This is exhibit was created to start a series of exhibits around Oklahoma Historical Socitey museums for the centennial of the 19th Amendment, authorizing woman's right to vote.
The idea for the exhibit was to use the imagery found in the book, The Wonderful Wizard of OZ to help explain the national political and social landscape of the era. The goal was to put the Suffrage movement within a broader historical context.
Mary Lease was the inspiration for the lead character Dorothy. This panel introduces Mrs. Lease. There is a follow up panel that explains her involvement with the Populist party and the Suffrage movement.
The poppy flower is a common representation of those killed in warfare. When the characters get stuck inthe poppy field, L. Frank Baum is using the imagery to comment on the age of American Imperialism and military expansion worldwide.
This exhibit was created for the Oklahoma Territorial Museum, an Oklahoma Historical Society museum. Michael Williams, the assistant curator, assited with research, writing, and editing the exhibit copy. I did all the design work with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. The panels were eventually printed on 31.5"x 40" 1/8 inch thick PVC panels and hung in the Historica Carnegie Library in Guthrie, OK.
