Miyazaki Art Show - Canvas Art + Bandana Pattern Design
PROJECT  Canvas art and graphic pattern on bandanas created for "The Enchanted World of Miyazaki" group art show at Mid-City Arthouse, Los Angeles, CA - August 5-7, 2016.

CHALLENGE  Conveying the key characters of Hayao Miyazaki’s story “My Neighbor Totoro” in my own graphic interpretation. Interpretation: The element of rain proved to be a significant character in the story. Because of the rain, the two sisters went to meet their father at the bus stop to provide him with an umbrella he had not taken to work that day. While waiting in the rain, Satsuki finally met Totoro, the character Mei had met earlier but was unsuccessful finding again. During the rain, the infamous cat bus swooped them up to start an adventure.

RESULT  Creating a modern line drawing of each of the spirit characters in a symmetrical formation, I created an illusion of rain as one sees looking up.

TURN OUT  Over 7,000 attendees

Screenprint cotton bandanas, 21 x 21 in.
Acrylic on canvas, 12 x 12 in.
