Watch: Some Sort of Sick Euphoria

Much like a wave, Andrew Cortes’ art is fleeting.

Through paintings, sculptures, and mosaic-based pieces, the LA-based artist captures those moments in nature that vanish quickly right in front of our eyes before we can absorb all of the detail, but lasting just long enough to cause an impression. 

He draws inspiration not only from the ocean and its murderous strength, but from the tiny grains of sand underneath it, the millisecond-long reflections of light on agitated water, and from the rugged pattern of all things natural. 

We catch up with him at a sweet spot in life when he starts to make sense of the word artist and its appropriate use — whatever that means. Although he is still not entirely comfortable calling himself an artist, his work surely carries a lot of confidence.
