Le nouveau dispositif pour eclairer la Tour Eiffel est inaugure le 31 décembre 1985.Concu par Pierre Bideau, ingenieur eclairagiste, il comprend 336 projecteurs, equipes de lampes a sodium haute pression de couleur jaune orange. Leurs faisceaux lumineux diriges du bas vers le haut illuminent la Tour Eiffel de l interieur de ses structures. Ils remplacent les 1290 projecteurs en service depuis 1958. Cette illumination, qui rencontre un succes unanime et mondial, a ete le point de depart, a Paris et dans les grandes villes de France et du monde, d un renouveau de la remise en valeur nocturne des monuments.
Le 31 decembre 1999 a minuit, le monde entier decouvre le phare et le scintillement de la Tour
Le phare, 2 faisceaux lumineux d une portee de 80 kilometres, est constitue de 4 projecteur motorises de type marine. Ils sont pilotes par micro-ordinateur, grace a un logiciel specifique et a un automate programmable qui gere leurs mouvements. Effectuant une rotation de 90°, ils sont synchronises pour former un double faisceau en croix pivotant a 360°.
Les lampes sont des Xénon de 6000 W choisies pour leur longevite de 1200 heures environ. La tete lumiere est surventilee pour eviter toute surchauffe, et un systeme de chauffage se met en route quand la temperature tombe en dessous de zero alors que les lampes sont eteintes.
Ce phare rappelle celui de Gustave Eiffel jouant le role d un repere symbolique et universel.
Le scintillement se superpose a l eclairage dore qu arbore la Tour depuis 1986, dont l effet est toujours aussi merveilleux.
