The media studies program is training the media makers and scholars of tomorrow by providing a comprehensive foundation in media history, theory and practice.

The media industries are vast and ever changing, composing a significant sector of the global economy. Meanwhile, our relationships, work and leisure activities are all shaped by mediated information, entertainment and interactions. The Media Studies program at Auburn offers students an in-depth approach to the study of film, television, music and digital media grounded in the contemporary humanities tradition.

Students take courses on media as a technology, art form, industry, as well as a site of audience engagement. Classes are also offered that explore media history, how media shapes popular culture or how media can reflect social values. Throughout the curriculum, students engage critically with media across platforms through a range of writing assignments, presentations and creative projects.

The Visual Media option is a practice-based series of courses designed for media makers who want to tell stories. Our students learn how to write, direct, shoot, edit, color correct, and design sound for narrative, documentary, and experimental short films. Students complete a mix of individual and collaborative projects designed to develop conceptual and technical filmmaking skills. The option provides the foundation for a wide variety of careers in digital media, including in filmmaking, television, motion graphics design, and social media.

Through this curriculum, students develop the academic foundation necessary to excel in an industry that is constantly evolving and graduate equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to work in a variety of fields.
