#1. My first portrait. That's how I started. I didn't think about it. I saw that guy sitting on the floor selling some handcrafts. He seemed very calm and relaxed, so I decided he should be the first one. Fortunatelly he said "yes" when I asked him if I can take him a picture. My hands were shaking, but I did it!

#1. Mi primer retrato. Así es como empecé, sin pensármelo. Vi a este hombre sentado en el suelo vendiendo artesanía. Parecía muy tranquilo y relajado, así que decidí que él sería el primero. Afortunadamente me dijo que sí cuando le pregunté si le podía hacer una foto. Me temblaban las manos, pero lo hice!

#2. I was walking with other colleagues and I turned to look for interesting faces. Then I saw that beautiful and tall woman with some friends walking just behind me. So I asked her if I could take her a picture and she said "yes". I was surprised because she was looking like a very self-confident woman (and I'm sure she is), and when I asked her she got very shy. I guess not every day some stranger with a camera ask you if he/she can take you a picture!

#2. Iba caminando con otros compañeros y me giré para buscar caras interesantes. Entonces vi a esta guapa y alta mujer con otros amigos caminando justo detrás de mi. Le pregunté si podía hacerle una foto y me dijo que sí. Lo que me sorprendió es que parecía una mujer muy segura de sí misma (y seguro que lo es), y en cambio cuando le pregunté si podía hacerle una foto reaccionó muy tímida. Me imagino que no cada día un extraño con una cámara te pregunta si puede hacerte una foto.

#3. He was waiting outside a store with another guy. Probably they were waiting for someone else. We establish eye contact before I ask him, because he saw me going around (I was waiting for my friends because they were taking other pictures). So I ask him and he said "yes".

#3. Estaba esperando fuera de una tienda con otro amigo. Probablemente esperaban a otra persona. Establecimos contacto visual antes de que le preguntara, porque me vio dando vueltas cerca de ellos (estaba esperando a que mis amigos acabaran de hacer sus fotos). Le pregunté y me dijo que sí. 

#4. I saw that guy from far, walking fast with his headphones, coming in my direction. I didn't think too much. When he was almost in front of me I just said "excuse me". He took off the headphones and when I asked him he said "yes". I really like how he looks at the camera.

#4. Vi a este chico desde lejos, caminando deprisa y con sus auriculares, viniendo en mi dirección. No me lo pensé demasiado. Cuando lo tuve casi en frente de mi le dije "perdona". Se quitó los auriculares y cuando le pregunté me dijo que sí. Me gusta mucho cómo mira a la cámara. 

#5. She was going with her boyfriend (the guy from the next portrait) and their dog. When I saw them I knew I had to stop them, she was perfect for a portrait. I asked them and they said yes instantly. They were a very kind and funny couple, and she was all the time smiling, giving good vibrations.

#5. Iba con su novio (el chico del siguiente retrato) y su perro. Cuando les vi supe que tenía que pararles, ella era perfecta para hacerle un retrato. Les pregunté y me dijeron que sí al momento. Fueron muy amables y divertidos, y ella no paraba de sonreír, dando buenas vibraciones.

#6. He was from Argentina, a very nice guy too, like his girlfriend. At the end, they asked me to take them a picture together.

#6. Él era de Argentina, un chico muy agradable también, igual que su novia. Al final, me pidieron que les hiciera una foto juntos. 

#7. I saw him from far, sitting on a bench with another friend (the guy from next picture). I went directly to them and I asked them. They looked surprised, but they said "yes". I think he was a little bit nervous because he was moving his mouth in a very strange way, but luckily I got that picture (it was later when I finally got self-confidence and said to some people not to smile).

#7. Le vi de lejos, sentado en un banco junto a otro amigo (el chico de la imagen siguiente). Fui directamente a ellos y les pregunté. Parecían sorprendidos, pero me dijeron que sí. Creo que estaba un poco nervioso porque no paraba de mover la boca de una forma extraña, pero por suerte conseguí esta imagen (fue más tarde cuando finalmente cogí confianza en mí misma y les pedí a algunas personas que no sonrieran).

#8. I didn't have to tell him to look serious, he was just looking at the camera, impassive, waiting until I finish the pictures.

#8. No le tuve que pedir que se pusiera serio, tan solo miró a la cámara, impasible, esperando a que acabara de hacerle las fotos. 

#9. My friend Berni, from Chile. Beautiful eyes. She was also taking street portraits.

#10. One of my friends asked that guy and his friend (the girl from next portrait) if we could take them some pictures and they said "yes", even though they seemed very surprised in the beginning. He was a little bit nervous and shy, but I like his half smile.

#10. Uno de mis amigos preguntó a este chico y a su amiga (la chica del siguiente retrato) si podíamos hacerles algunas fotos. Dijeron que sí, aunque al principio parecían muy sorprendidos. Él estaba un poco nervioso y parecía tímido, pero me gusta su media sonrisa.

#11. That's the first portrait I took from her, and I consider it the best one. I decided to try vertical crop because of her hair, but even her eyes and her mouth's shape are perfect. She was also very shy and kind.

#11. Éste fue el primer retrato que le hice, y lo considero el mejor. Decidí probar el retrato en vertical por la forma de su pelo, pero incluso su mirada y la expresión de su boca son perfectas. También era una chica muy tímida y amable.

#12. He was walking fast, coming in my direction and with his headphones. And without thinking I stopped him, he seemed a peculiar person. Very kindly he said "yes" when I asked him if I could take him a picture. I was talking to him in English, but then I realized he speaks Spanish. Then my argentinian friend asked him what part of Argentina was he from. They were almost neighbors.

#12. Iba caminando deprisa, en mi dirección y con sus auriculares. Y sin pensármelo le paré, parecía una persona muy peculiar. Muy amablemente me dijo que sí cuando le pregunté si podía hacerle una foto. Estaba hablando con él en inglés, pero me di cuenta que hablaba español. Después mi amigo argentino le preguntó de qué parte de Argentina era. Eran casi vecinos.

#14. She said "yes" from the first moment. She was smiling in the first pictures, but then I told her to be a little bit more serious. In the end I get this half smile, which I like it.

#14. Me dijo que sí desde el primer momento. En las primeras fotos sonreía, por eso le dije que se pusiera un poco más seria. Al final capté esta media sonrisa, la cual me gusta. 

#15. The organizer, Andrzej, stopped that guy and that guy asked him how could he get to a museum. They started talking while I was trying to find other interesting faces. Not lucky, I went back to them and the guy wasn't still sure about let him take a picture, but in the end he said "yes", so I took a picture of him as well because I thought he seemed an interesting person.

#15. El organizador, Andrzej, paró a este hombre y éste le preguntó cómo podía llegar a un determinado museo. Empezaron a hablar mientras yo buscaba caras interesantes para fotografiar. Sin suerte, volví a ellos y el hombre aún no estaba convencido sobre si dejarse hacer una foto o no, pero al final dijo que sí, así que yo también le hice alguna foto porque me pareció una persona interesante para ser fotografiada.

#16. He was walking with his wife. When I asked him if I could take him a picture, he said "yes". But when I asked him to be serious, it was an impossible mission. His wife said that it was very strange, because he's always serious when somebody take him a picture. But not this time. He was laughing, probably because he was nervious. And I was laughing too. So it was a very funny encounter.

#16. Iba caminando con su mujer. Cuando le pregunté si podía hacerle una foto me dijo que sí. Pero cuando le pregunté si podía ponerse serio, fue una misión imposible. Su mujer dijo que era muy raro, porque siempre se ponía serio cuando alguien le hacía una foto. Pero no esta vez. No paraba de reír, supongo que porque estaría nervioso. Y yo me reía también. Fue un encuentro muy divertido.

#17. He was sitting at the end of La Rambla, reading something. He is a painter from Perú. When I asked him, he said "yes", but with one condition: he wants to have the picture, but he doesn't have internet. So we agreed that next time I go to Barcelona I am gonna give him his printed portrait. He also gave me his number and address, he told me "you can also send me the picture by post". But I prefer to go back and talk to him again. He seemed a very interesting man.

#17. Estaba sentado al final de La Rambla, leyendo algo. Es un pintor peruano. Cuando le pregunté, me dijo que sí, pero con una condición: quiere tener la fotografía, pero no tiene internet. Así que acordamos que la próxima vez que fuera a Barcelona le traería su retrato impreso. También me dio su número y su dirección, me dijo "también puedes enviarme la foto por correo ordinario". Pero prefiero ir en persona y volver a hablar con él. Me pareció un hombre muy interesante.

#18. I liked his hat, so I decided to stop him. He seemed surprised but in the end he said "yes". He was a very kind man.

#18. Me gustó su sombrero, así que decidí pararle. Parecía sorprendido, pero al final me dijo que sí. Fue un hombre muy amable.

#19. He was walking with two other friends. So I asked them if I could take them a picture, but I also said that I would specially like to take a picture of him, because he seemed a very peculiar and funny guy. The two girls were having fun when I said that, so it was difficult to get a serious picture. In the end I got that picture. He's not serious, but I like how he looks at the camera.

#19. Iba caminando con dos amigas. Les pregunté si podía hacerles una foto, pero también les dije que especialmente me gustaría hacerle una foto a él, pues parecía un chico peculiar y divertido. Les hizo gracia que dijera aquello, así que fue difícil hacer una foto en la que estuviera serio. Al final conseguí esta foto. No está muy serio, pero me gusta cómo mira a la cámara.

#20. I wanted to have a picture of a business man, so I decided to stop him. He was from Sweden and he was walking with his greek friend (in the next picture). In the beginning I wasn't sure he will accept, but he did. It was a very funny encounter. They told me what they were doing in Barcelona and we were talking for a while.

#20. Quería hacerle una foto a un hombre de negocios, así que le paré. Era de Suecia e iba caminando con su amigo griego (en la siguiente imagen). Al principio no estaba segura que fuera a aceptar, pero al final lo hizo. Fue un encuentro divertido. Me explicaron qué hacían en Barcelona y estuvimos hablando un rato.

#21. He was the friend from Greece, a very kind man. He didn't talk so much English, so his friend was the one who was talking when he couldn't say something.

#21. El amigo de Grecia, muy amable. No hablaba mucho inglés, así que era su amigo el que me explicaba cuando éste no podía expresarse.

#22. I stopped that girl and her friend (in the next picture) because I found them interesting for a portrait. They were very surprised, but they said "yes". I like that picture because she looks like surprised. She was very nice and was smiling a lot when I told her why I was taking pictures.

#22. Paré a esta chica y a su amiga (en la siguiente imagen) porque las encontré muy interesantes para hacerles un retrato. Se sorprendieron mucho, pero me dijeron que sí. Me gusta esta fotografía porque su expresión es de sorprendida. Fue muy agradable y no paraba de sonreír cuando les expliqué porqué hacía esas fotografías.

#23. I really like that portrait, how she looks at the camera. That was the third picture, the last one. When I took her the first picture, she was smiling with a very cute and shy face. Then I asked her to be serious and she suddenly changed and looked at the camera like a very self-confidence girl.

#23. Me gusta mucho este retrato, su mirada, la manera en cómo mira a la cámara. Ésta fue la tercera foto, la última. Cuando le hice la primera foto, ella sonrió de una manera muy dulce y tímida. Entonces le dije que se pusiera seria y de repente cambió y miró a la cámara como una mujer segura de sí misma.

#24. She was walking with her sister (in the next picture) and brother, but I just talked with the two sisters. They were from Philippines. I really enjoyed the minutes I spent with these two ladies, they were really funny. When I asked them if I could take them some pictures, they were jocking about how dangerous can be to upload pictures in Internet, but they said I'm not taking them naked pictures, so they said it's fine. She was asking me if she will find a boyfriend by this way. We were laughing a lot, but it was easy to get a serious face.

#24. Iba caminando con su hermana (en la siguiente imagen) y su hermano, pero sólo hablé con las dos hermanas. Eran de Filipinas. Disfruté muchos los minutos que pasé con estas dos mujeres, eran muy divertidas. Cuando les pregunté si podía hacerles algunas fotos, estuvieron bromeando sobre lo peligroso que era subir imágenes a Internet, pero dijeron que yo no iba a hacerles fotos desnudas, así que no había ningún problema en que les hiciera un retrato. También me preguntó si encontraría un novio mediante esta vía. Reímos mucho, pero fue fácil captar su cara seria.

#26. I was walking and I saw him in front of me, talking to another man. So when I was next to him and I saw his face, I thought I had to ask him. He said "yes" from the first moment, and he really seemed a very friendly and calm man. I like that picture a lot because of his eyes, they are very kind.

#26. Iba caminando y lo vi delante de mi, hablando con otro hombre. Así que cuando pasé por su lado y finalmente vi su cara, pensé que tenía que preguntarle. Dijo que sí desde el primer momento, y me pareció un hombre muy agradable y tranquilo. Me gusta mucho esta imagen por su mirada, es una mirada bondadosa.

#27. That day there was some kind of celebration in Barcelona, so there was a lot of people performing music in the streets. This guy was going with many other people and their instruments, and I found him very interesting, because he was wearing a very big sunglasses. Then I took a picture of him with sunglasses and another one without them, because I think the eyes are the most important thing in a portrait.

#27. Ese día había algún tipo de celebración en Barcelona, así que había mucha gente tocando música en la calle. Este chico iba con mucha más gente, cada uno acompañado por su instrumento, y encontré que era muy interesante porque llevaba unas gafas de sol muy grandes. Así que le hice una foto con las gafas y otra sin ellas, porque considero que los ojos son la parte más importante en un retrato.
