The Drowsy Chaperone Poster Concept

The Metropolitan State University of Denver’s Theatre Department commissioned the BFA Communication Design department’s Studio M to concept and design options for their 2018 production, The Drowsy Chaperone. After initial research, meeting with the client, and an approved design brief was established; six designers working within Studio M created six different poster designs in order to present possible concepts to the client.

The inspiration for this poster design comes primarily from the Art Deco period, speaking to the time frame in which The Drowsy Chaperone is set within. Iconography is utilized through the design in order to encapsulate the characters and tone of the comprehensive narrative. Through the appropriation of the gramophone to resemble a martini glass, imperative iconography is highlighted and is used to portray, or ‘play’ out, the events that take place throughout storyline.

The chose of color came directly from the jewel tone motif set by the Art Deco period, while the typography portrays the playful nature of the 1920’s and approachable communication through its rounded style.
