Repúblicas Bananeras is a World Music project that fusions representative Latin American rhythms with the wide language of jazz improv.
The name of the project aims to resignify the discriminatory origin of the “banana republic” phrase by embracing Latin American identity and diversity, combined with the fun, relaxed and spontaneous way of living of its young population.
I wanted to create a vibrant and fun logo that would speak to the audience in a sassy way, allowing them to connect with Latin-American's very unique way of seeing life and solving things.
The tagline, "Nacidos para improvisar" (born to improvise), was created by Fernando Torres as an intended pun to describe both the improvisation face of jazz and the Latin American way of life, in which, almost on a daily basis, we improvise to survive.
On its first edition, "Repúblicas Bananeras" is a journey that explores local rhythms from Brazil (samba), Colombia (cumbia), Chile (Andean music), Argentina (tango), Trinidad & Tobago (calypso) and Mexico (son Jarocho).
The color palette is formed of the colors of these countries’ flags. Just like the project itself and as most Latin American people do, the logo adapts to fit into each country's flag and rhythm.
