Monstrous Inktober 2018

Day 1 - Giant Scorpion

"Forget its venom! You won't be so lucky. It's the sting you should worry about. Sharp as a knife, big as a house, it can pierce you just as needle pierce a bug."
Day 2 - Mountain Wanderer
(Tranquil)

"It's very old, older than anything... Shh quiet! You hear that? It calls. This is ancient, lost forgotten tongue... Magnificent!"
Day 3 - Chimera
(Roasted)

"Maybe for you, it's a kitty. For me, it's an enormous, fire-breathing creature in just a few years. Chimaeras were not meant to be pets."
Day 4 - Djinn

"No, there wasn't anything special about him. Just a regular Djinn. For her, on the other hand, he was somehow a private business."
Day 5 - Basilisk

"Giant chicken?! Did you ever been on a farm? Basilisk does not look like a chicken even slightly..."
Day 6 - Forest Devourer (Drooling)

"That creature has an enormous body but limited mind. It sleeps for centuries but when woken up it is hungry and can think only about another meal... for another century."
Day 7 - Beholder (Exhausted)

"Those who were taught in magical craft are convinced that they can make anything and nothing can do them harm, but they are wrong. There are monsters out there, deadly even for wisest of mages."
Day 8 - Fiend (Star)

"There are countless monsters living in our world but if you are a bold and overambitious mage you can find ones that are not. Some of the mages are stupid enough to try to tame them and some are lucky enough to succeed."
Day 9 - Griffin (Precious)

"Gryphons are not mindless monsters. They are kind, proud and highly intelligent. Some people even catch them, tame and train them, use them to fight. But beware on the trail, Gryphons are very territorial creatures and they love horse meat."
Day 10 - Water Elemental (Flowing)

"Elemental forces are eternal and unstoppable. Some even attribute them to Deities or Gods. But if you are strong enough you can tame them and bend them to your will."
Day 11 - Cave Spider (Cruel)

"Cave spiders don't use venom while hunting. They trap their prey in a sticky web, wrap around in thick cocoon and hang from cave ceiling, where the victims slowly die from dehydration. Spiders usually feed on forest animals, horses and lost travellers."
Day 12 - Skyback Whale

"Travellers and sailors sometimes talk about these majestic giants that drift above northern seas. It is said that they foretell a long and cold winter."
Day 13 - Dragon (Guarded)

"Dragons are natural hoarders. Just like some species of birds, they look for and collect trinkets and valuables in their nests where they guard them carefully. Wizards from White City say it is related to the fact that the eggs of the first dragons were golden."
Day 14 - Gargoyle (Clock)

"Motionless sentinels, silent watchers. Demons carved in stone, enchanted with magic and hard work of a sculptor. They guard what is sacred against demons. For that hateful creatures, there is no monster so terrifying as their own reflection."
Day 15 - Goblins (Weak)

"There are no creatures as pathetic and irritating as Goblins. These weak, cowardly and mentally limited little greenskins love malice and mischief. But beware, travellers, their strength lies in numbers."
Day 16 - Lich (Angular)

"Mastering magic craft is hard and requires sacrifices. Some Wizards, however, in lust for power reject their lives and turn to dark arts. The ultimate sacrifice makes them empty, undead creatures. But possessing enormous power and somehow staying in one piece does not make one immortal. There is nothing immortal in a pile of bones and rotten flesh."
Day 17 - River Folks (Swollen)

"They may be not the prettiest but usually, they are harmless. Witless countrymen often say that River Folks eat lost people who follow a river bank to find their way but it's just tales. They eat only what they fish and they are great at fishing."
 Day 18 - Kraken (Bottle)

"Sailors, merchants and pirates love telling tales about their voyages and sea adventures. And there is no better marine story than one about mighty Kraken. Maybe big enough to drag a whole ship under water but still just an oversized squid nevertheless."
Day 19 - Phoenix (Scorched)

"From all magical creatures, none is more amazing and beautiful than Phoenix. Some say most powerful even. For is there a power greater than to return to life from the dust?"
Day 20 - Troll (Breakable)

"Trolls are in fact far more intelligent than most people assume from their looks. Sure, they are huge, strong brutes but unlike Ogres or Cyclops, they usually can talk, make jokes or even speak with riddles. These two features make them ideal guards, highwayman or bodyguards. And usually, to make the work done, they don't even need to move a muscle."
Day 21 - Vampire (Drain)

"Vampire community is large and hierarchic. On a top of it stand highly developed individuals possessing enormous power and intelligence who keep armies of lesser vampires on a short leash. Because most of the species are just mindless bat-like beasts driven by anger and bloodlust."
Day 22 - Mimic (Expensive)

"Mages love magical trinkets and enchanted stones almost as much as they hate uninvited guests, especially those rummaging through their chests. Mimics are dangerous only for those who want something that isn't theirs. Archenemy of adventurers, thieves and rogues."
Day 23 - Swampland Drowner (Muddy)

"From the scientific point of view, it is a kind of carnivorous plant in a continuous state of vegetation. Smaller specimens have only a few inches, the largest are the size of a fisherman's hut. The tips of his limbs imitate flowers on a water surface and attack the prey by pulling it under, where they are drowned and devoured."
Day 24 - Ent (Chop)

"Dendroids are ancient forest keepers. It is said that these huge creatures once travelled the world searching for the perfect place to take root. For hundreds of years, the forest was growing around them and they have defended it against any threat. Another theory speaks of the forest spirit, which in the moment of danger, take control over the oldest and strongest trees."
Day 25 - Giant Whipler (Prickly)

"Carnivorous flower found in rainforests. It grows to gigantic sizes - the largest specimen described was over 30 meters in diameter with thorny vines with a length of around 100 meters. Natives call him Dragon Constrictor because legends say it could have easily caught the flying dragon by its neck and strangle it."
Day 26 - Mountain Serpent (Stretch)

"The body of this gigantic reptile stretches for miles and usually starts beneath surface. It lives in mountain areas and is known for hard as stone scales. Usually, it's harmless to smaller creatures due to slow movement."
Day 27 - Thunderbird

"For some, they bring rain and prosperity, for others fear and destruction. Some worship them as gods, others curse them as monsters. These beautiful, majestic eagles are much larger than other kinds and their huge wings generate an energy charge, causing massive electric waves and lightning bolts with each flap."
Day 28 - Nameless (Gift)

"The embodiments of wrath and despair in pure form. Beings not belonging to our world but wandering freely between dimensions. Though they do not have a body and a flesh form in our world, they possess a terrifying power to control small and weak creatures who call them divine. Unfortunately for them, these false gods demand from their followers great and cruel sacrifices."
Day 29 - Two-Headed Giant (Double)

"Giants are huge, humanoid creatures that have limited intelligence but enormous strength. They're capable of uprooting trees and shifting mountains. Some of them have more than one head and even several pairs of arms. The legend about Two-Headed Giant says that no one can defeat him alone. Only two adventurers, fighting arm in arm, have a chance to slay him, each fighting and cutting down a different head."
Day 30 - Sandworm (Jolt)

"Kind of scavenger worm living beneath the sand surface of big desert areas. An arid and uninhabited area makes it feed on almost everything that comes close to its lair. Although its size and unstable ground make its attack preceded by strong earthquakes, it is an incredibly fast and dangerous opponent."
Day 31 - Minotaur (Slice)

"Minotaurs are hybrids between bull and intelligent humanoid creature (usually human, less often orc). They are perfect warriors with strength and toughness after bulls but wits and agility after humans. They are not very intelligent, but they usually know at least two languages, some of them are even literate. That makes them great leaders and guardians of, particularly valuable treasures."
