Friday Night Shenanigans (2018)

Friday Night Shenanigans (2018) is a caricature assembly of my best friend, boyfriend and myself spending a Friday night at home, doing what we do best: discuss what we are passionate about.

We are all a part of the Media industry, Devan (Best Friend) works in the VR industry but has previous experience in the Web Developing Industry and Gary (Boyfriend) is a Graphics Designer and a Web Developer by trade.

They have a lot to talk about... All that "Web Lingo" blows straight over my head...

I decided to capture this moment with caricatures of us in our kitchen/living room.

Rough Draft

This is the rough sketch done live on the Friday night. We are all sitting at the kitchen counter on bar stools. This is the final rough sketch, finalizing blocking, arrangement, props, features and facial expressions for the digitization process. Each character is drawn with an accessory that is unique to them and something that they wear quite often apart from prominent features that makes them recognizable.

Improved & Digitized Draft

This is the digitized version of the rough sketch with minor corrections (paying close attention to the characterizing details of each caricature) to the caricatures.

Base Colour Draft

I always like to start with base colours as a foundation for my illustrations because of several pertinent reasons. 1. It solidifies the image within the composition. 2. I have immediate reference to the shades I intend to use and 3. Clean-up/adjustments are less of a headache.

These base colours would also repeat themselves in a simplified comic book (to be published online in 2020).

Final Product

The final product contains the fully shaded versions of each caricature, detailed prop imagery as well as a photo realistic image of the actual kitchen/living room we spent the night in. The content of the conversation is depicted within a typical comic strip speech bubble and a thought cloud.

The colourful characters are juxtaposed against the dramatically desaturated environment purposed to draw attention to the caricatures.
